Carlito’s Way

Brian DePalma’s endless passion for cinema and his ability to watch, study and think about film differently has always been an emotional journey rather than a rational one, as can be witnessed by the disaster that became The bonfire of The Vanities, which at best can be described as a black fat fly throwing itself half-heartedly against a grime laced curtain window.

However, resurgence was on its way in the form of a graceful and elegant script about a lowly gangster who was released early from prison with all the intentions of going straight.

With his skill to be able to bring the best out of Al Pacino and a fear of becoming redundant in an ever fickle industry, DePalma would demand a more restrained performance from his leading man and the result would be a potent cocktail from two master craftsmen.

Bubba Ho-Tep

The vast majority of movies are soulless, machine tooled, cynical exercises, filled with gratuitous explosives and mind-numbing body counts that are increasingly reliant on computer generated special effects that seem to crowd anything that resembles human contact right off the screen.

Bubba Ho-Tep suffers none of the above.

From the director of Phantasm, Don Coscarelli and the star of The Evil Dead Trilogy, comes a redemptive, comedy horror that is both heart-breaking and uplifting.

When mysterious deaths plague a Texas retirement home, it’s up to its senior citizens to take on a 300 year old Egyptian mummy.

With tongue firmly in cheek, Coscaralli weaves a low budget, warm picture, peppered full of ideas that go hand in hand with the manic performance of Bruce Campbell as the aging Elvis, with none of the overused and tired formulas of its big budget counterparts.

TIMECOP

After a decade or more of straight to DVD releases, it’s hard to believe that Jean-Claude Van Damme was on the fast track to become the natural successor to the likes of Stallone and Schwartzenegger, whose decade of destruction came to a screeching halt with the dawn of the 90’s. It seemed that Claude was ready to take over as the muscle bound hero.

Monitoring Van Damme’s success from low to medium budget movies, Universal would decide that they wanted to be in the Van Damme business and would sign him to a three picture deal. Thus began his ascension into the A-List, with the comic book, action time-travel extravaganza that is Timecop.

Claude would play Max Walker a TEC Agent trying to stop Ron Silver’s corrupt politician from using time travel for his own ends. As a Van Damme vehicle, the usual roster of high kicks and spectacular splits are all present and correct.

All of Claude’s greatest hits are currently muted for sequels, with a possible return to former glory with just a little twist to the same old story!

Gladiator

Ridley Scott comes from a more traditional artistic background where his palette is only limited by his medium. So it comes as no surprise that with the advent of CGI, modern film is where he has thrived.

From his decade in the wilderness, Scott would return to the Hollywood fold to breathe new life into a genre that had been dead for almost forty years.

Gladiator begins with golden hues set to a spine-tingling score and ends as a modern masterpiece. With every frame carefully chosen to elicit maximum emotional response from any given movie audience.

A shiny new property, in this cynical age of sequels, prequels and spin-offs.
