Die Hard
Given how saturated the action genre had become at the time and pop culture’s fascination with the endless recycling of tired old material, Die Hard’s plot of terrorists taking over a high rise building, with an off-duty cop being the fly in the ointment was hardly earth shattering.
But combine it with a director who understood the genre and with a blistering pace and believable characters, it would fire the starting gun for the next decade of slumming, serious actors who would cross over to become legitimate action stars and unwittingly create a genre that is now besieged with bloat, waste and dry rot.
